Natural Principles of Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is a versatile and indispensible essential oil known for its soothing and delicate scent, and used throughout
history as both a fragrance and for a variety of therapeutic benefits.
Known for its beautiful and vibrant violet hues that fill the rolling hillsides in springtime, the Lavender flower’s
visual beauty and delicate aroma have captivated diverse cultures for thousands of years. Some of its earliest recorded use
can be found amongst the Amazigh, more than 2,500 years ago along the Mediterranean coastal regions of the Maghreb, and as a
favorite of the ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and people of the Arabian desert, who all used Lavender as a
perfume and for a variety of medical uses and ceremonial occasions.
In Medieval and Renaissance Europe, Lavender was prized and greatly revered for its medicinal powers and grown in
"infirmarian's gardens," specifically cultivated as a medicine to ward off disease, including the infamous Great Plague of
London of 1665, which threatened the entire populations as it rampaged across Europe.
Lavender’s wonderfully calming fragrance is also widely known for its relaxing effects and for assisting in combating stress.
Its antiseptic properties are notably effective for colds, flu, sinuses, asthma and other respiratory infections. It also
provides excellent support for the skin, maintaining moisture and vitality, while preventing sun damage and scarring. It is also
widely used as an effective remedy for healing of burns.
Lavender, like no other, has become one of the most favorite and endearing essential oils of all time.

Historical Traditional Uses
Lavender is a versatile and indispensible essential oil known for its soothing and delicate scent, used throughout history as both a
fragrance and for a variety of therapeutic benefits.
Originating in the Mediterranean regions of North Africa and Southern Europe, the history of use of Lavender dates back thousands of years.
The Amazigh women of North Africa used Lavender as a aphrodisiac and protective amulet, worn in sachet long their wrists. The Ancient
Egyptians cherished it’s fragrance as well, and Lavender Essential Oil was an important element used in their mummification process, wrapping
the dead in lavender-dipped shrouds as part of the embalming process.
The name Lavender is derived from the Latin ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash”, and the fresh, sweet aroma of Lavender was used by the Romans to
“scent” or wash fresh their baths, beds, clothes, hair and personal possessions. The Romans also used Lavender oil as insect repellent and
for flavoring—adding it dried to foods, beverages and even to their smoking mixtures. It was considered a prized commodity and sold to
ancient Romans for 100 denarii per pound -- equivalent to a full month's wage for a typical farm laborer—and was a much sought after
symbol of social status.
The ancient Greeks used Lavender for a wide variety of cures, everything from insomnia and back pain-- to even insanity. They called Lavender
nardus, or nard, after the ancient Syrian city of Naarda, and was considered one of the holy herbs in the Bible, used to prepare the
Holy Essence and Nard or ‘spikenard’, from the ‘Song of Solomon’.
During the Renaissance Europe, Lavender was sprinkled along the stone floors of castles and used as a disinfectant and deodorant. Grown as a
medicinal herb in "infirmarian's gardens" and cultivated specifically to fight disease, Europeans wore sachets of Lavender and immersed their
body in Lavender oil to protect themselves from the Great Plague that rampaged across Europe, known far and wide as the Black Death.
"Four Thieves Vinegar", a cleansing antiseptic containing a strong dose of Lavender, was used by looters of the multitudes of plague graves,
and gained a reputation of protecting the thieves from contamination after a long night's work. Today, the Plague is known to be a virus that
was easily transmitted by fleas, so the use of Lavender oil, with is strong insect repellent properties, could very well have lived up to its word.
Throughout history, Lavender has been an invaluable essential oil in both perfumery and aromatherapy. It has long been cherished for its
romantic, sensual, and aphrodisiac qualities. According to legend, Cleopatra, the Ancient Egyptian Queen and last active pharaoh of Ancient
Egypt, used lavender to seduce her consorts, including two of her most famous, the great Roman Emperor and General Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.
Today Lavender is cultivated all over the world and used extensively for both its aromatic and medicinal properties.
The therapeutic benefits of Lavender are varied and many. It is perhaps the most versatile essential oil of all, used for many conditions
affecting the digestive, respiratory and nervous systems, and in the treatment of muscular and joint pain.
Lavender is also known for being immensely effective in relieving headaches and for its incredible calming effects. It’s also very effectively
at relieving insomnia. A small dash of Lavender oil can be applied to the pillow or sprayed on the sheets to help induce a blissful night’s sleep.
Highly esteemed for its therapeutic properties in treating skin disorders, Lavender is one of the very few essential oils that can be used
undiluted on the skin to treat burns, wounds and scars.
Today, Lavender is widely used in skin care products and a variety of cosmetics, such as soaps, foot care, deodorants and powders, and for
keeping insects at bay, as well as to ease their bites. Dried Lavender buds are also commonly used around the home to scent clothes and drawers,
and Lavender waters to scent linens and sheets. Lavender can also be found as a common ingredient in many commercial household products, which
include a the fragrance of this fantastic essential oil.
