“If you want to know what your thoughts were like in the past, look at your body today. If you want to know what your body will be like in the future, look at your thoughts today."

Super Brain: Unleashing the Explosive Power of Your Mind
To Maximize Health, Happiness, and Spiritual Well-Being

Despite the countless unquestionably beneficial aspects of our modern technological world, alarming new studies show that as a whole, modern culture has been terribly unkind to our mental health. Somewhere on the road to progress we seem to have lost our way, perhaps ignoring the symptoms while putting bandages on them hoping they would go away.

Statistics show that Americans in particular are struggling with an ever-increasing rise in mental health issues, including stress, fear, melancholy and dysfunction. So much so, that it appears that we now find ourselves in the throes of a virtual epidemic of anxiety and depression. It seems that although society today is indeed living longer, it’s not at all living better.

In a recent study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly half of all Americans surveyed met the criteria for at least one mental illness at some point in their lives. That’s an astonishing number compared to just a generation ago.

Amongst a host of predictable things like career, finances, relationships, and the many other factors related to our modern lives that you’d expect, surprisingly, low self-esteem and the tremendous emotional turbulence that comes along with it, has also been pinpointed as a major contributing factor to the current rise in poor mental health.

Whether it’s the unrealistic body-images or status symbols of success that forever pervade the media, or the perfectly curated lives that we’re bombarded with daily on social media, psychologists see a pattern where society’s belief in an increasingly unrealistic ideal of perfection has increased our expectations in life so much that we can never keep up. It perpetually sets us up for “failure”. We ruminate over our lives when we never quite reach those goals, have that perfect marriage, can be that perfect weight—or fill in the blank to any of the many other false expectations that we acquire.

In short, compared to the glossy images of the perfect lives that we’ve come to believe that we need—and expect--we’re simply never quite good enough. The end result is a sort of mass disappointment filled with frustration, sadness and even regret. And although there certainly isn’t any one single cause for the rapid rise in depression that we’re witnessing today, it’s certainly not difficult to see that low self-esteem could in part be fueling some of it. It’s easy to make the connection.

The Mind-Body Connection

And just as depression is on the rise like never before, so are a host of physical ailments that Americans are struggling with in unprecedented numbers. There’s diabetes, hypertension, heart-disease, chronic pain, inflammation, obesity, and seemingly endless forms of never-before-heard-of types of cancer. Overall, for decades now, despite a greater awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise, Americans as a whole have been in a steady decline in health. Emotionally, mentally and physically. Once again, it’s hard not to make the mind-body connection.

And yet, looking back at how we arrived here, that’s precisely been the case.

Until recently, one of the biggest contributing factors in determining our approach to improving our health and wellbeing has been that most people –including the vast majority of medical doctors—have isolated our emotional and physical health as completely separate from one another. After all, this is what doctors learned in medical school, and as such, what was advocated to their patients and then widely accepted to be true amongst society as a whole. With wellness of the mind completely isolated from any consideration in internal medicine and entirely banished to psychology and psychiatry--one single dedicated branch of medicine alone--for years modern healthcare has done a tremendous disservice to us all by targeting its focus exclusively to the physical body, without proper recognition of the many important factors that mental health plays on our overall physical well-being as well.

Just a mere twenty years ago there was tremendous opposition in mainstream medicine to any notion of a mind-body connection, where thoughts, beliefs and emotions could have any direct physical consequences on the body—and this position was held on to and fought for until the better end, when inescapably hard cutting-edge science began to prove otherwise.

Today, decades of research in Neuroscience, Genetics and Molecular Biology have led to revolutionary breakthroughs in the emerging fields of Epigenetics and Neuroplasticity, validating what most health care professionals now feel should have clearly been obvious about our health in the first place—which is that given the intricate and complex nature of the brain, which produces our every thought, memory, feeling, action and experience—as well as controls every detail of each of the 50 trillion cells of our entire astonishingly complex human anatomy—including our heart, lungs, hormones, immune system and every other single aspect of our physiology—how could the mind and body not be connected?

Obvious to us all. Yes, you would think.

But science and its need to validate or falsify a theory is a tricky thing, and if there is anything that we’ve learned from the past 500 years of western scientific discipline it’s that everything that we thought to be “true” is constantly changing.

We now know that the mind-body relationship is far too integrated to be seen as separate.

And guess what?

The science is now here to prove it.

Thanks to breakthroughs in advanced brain imaging techniques, Neuroscientists have now been able to piece together the once mysterious puzzle of just how the mind-body connection actually works, and the verdict is in, without a doubt, backed by countless research studies that clearly demonstrate that it’s a very real and powerful component to our physical health.

One such study, conducted by scientists at the Department of Psychology and Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, at the University of California, Los Angeles, using advanced 3D brain imaging techniques, found that strong emotions of loneliness caused by social rejection trigger the same chemical reactions in same region of the brain responsible for generating and controlling physical pain.

How about that for mind-body connection?

In a similar study, Dr. John Cacioppo, PhD, professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago, found that the range of emotions experienced by people suffering from loneliness were also associated with higher instances of inflammation, lower cardiovascular output, chronic sleep dysfunction (including full bouts of insomnia), and overall lowered immune response, often leading to chronic life-long illness.

According to the best and most cutting edge science, every thought, every memory, and every belief that we have triggers an instant cascade of cellular reactions in our complex nervous system, influencing every molecule in our physical body.

And here’s the thing.

Our cells are constantly eavesdropping on our thoughts without us even knowing it, physically responding in different ways depending our emotions, feelings, expectations, and overall mental state of being.

Until the recent broad paradigm shift that moved holistic medicine front and center into the mainstream of modern healthcare, many of the physical issues related to an imbalance in mind-body wellness were often overlooked or difficult to diagnose. Frequently only the symptoms themselves were addressed, using pharmaceutical drugs or surgery as the principle modes of treatment, leaving the true root cause of the illness completely unresolved. Negative outcomes were often the result, with chronic emotional and physical illness becoming a life long struggle for most, and pharmaceutical drugs the source of a never-ending cycle of illness, dependence, and addiction, rather than true mental and physical healing. Another critical factor that has often been overlooked in modern healthcare is the powerful impact our environment has on our health.

Environment plays a key role in our cellular response, triggering positive or negative responses depending on our experience. Just like different foods metabolize and nourish us differently, so do our experiences transform and metabolize differently as well.

Toxins, pollutants, traffic, and even difficult neighbors are all considered environmental stressors, and they play a major influence upon our mood, sense of well-being, behavior, and ultimately our health.

Stress generated negative experiences also trigger the release of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, causing a broad array of negative physiological changes including lowered immune function, increased blood pressure, inflammatory bowl and gastro-intestinal distress, and the list just goes on and on.

What’s more, chronic and long term stress and its associated elevated cortisol levels, also creates an increased risk of long term mental health related illness, including anxiety, depression—and in severe cases-- suicidal tendencies—especially in adolescents.

There can be no more dramatic mind-body connection than that.

The good news is that positive emotions and environments have an equally profound effect on our physical bodies and mental well-being.

Yoga, Mindfulness, and Meditation are all excellent examples—and the research is in—it’s not just mental bliss that daily practice generates, but real and tangible improvements to our overall health and well-being, including lowered symptoms of anxiety, nervousness and depression, lower stress levels, boosts in brain function and improvement in heart health—just to name a few.

And then there’s what called “the nature connection”, a powerful example of the role of environment in our health.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the closer you live to nature, the healthier you're likely to be.

Researchers found that people who lived within one square mile of a park or a wooded area experienced much less anxiety and depression than those who lived farther away from natural green spaces. In addition, research shows that simply spending time around trees is found to have a dramatic effect on overall health, reducing stress, improving mood, lowering blood pressure, as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline.

Whether it's a morning run at sunrise, strolling along the beach, or just inhaling the aroma of flowers in bloom while quietly listening to the wind blow through the trees, spending time in the outdoors actually makes us healthier --mentally and physically—from the inside out.

And here’s the kick.

Using advanced brain imaging techniques, Neuroscientists have shown that it’s not just walks in the park that make our brain light up with joy, but even just having artwork or other images depicting natural beauty around us in our home or office can have an equally positive effect.

Whether we’re actually outside experiencing Nature, or merely enjoying the visual experience through art, images, meditation or Neuroplasticity Visualization Techniques, research shows that the brain responds exactly the same way, by consistently and reliably boosting cognitive functioning and altering the chemical responses in the brain that relieve stress and improve health.

Holistic Healing & Mind-Body Wellness

Experiencing a deep sense of connection with nature is a universal human experience and has long been an important component of holistic natural healing.

Who hasn’t looked at the glow of a sunrise or gazed up at the night sky and felt a deep sense of connection?

Historically, wisdom traditions from around the world have all understood the connection between body, mind, spirit and wellness, and recognized that each composed a part of the whole. This understanding has been at the root of therapeutic and spiritual practices for ages, particularly in India, where the 5,000-year-old Vedic wisdom tradition gave us Meditation, Yoga and Ayurveda, the three pillars of Vedanta.

This spiritual component of health and healing is an important one. Spirituality provides us with a deep sense of meaning, hope, comfort, and inner peace in our lives—all of which are feelings critical to living a happy and healthy life in harmony and balance.

One of the guiding principles of mind-body wellness is understanding the interconnection of all things and recognizing that we are all part of vast inseparable and infinite field of intelligence in the universe.

Although the understanding in Western Medicine of how emotions and mental wellness affect physical health dates as far back as Galen, the prolific second-century physician, and Moses Maimonides, the medieval physician-philosopher, until recently, modern medicine continued to discount and dismiss this approach and treat the mind and body as not integrated at all.

Not so with traditional and modern holistic or “integrative” medicine.

Today, we are living in a golden age of scientific research with new discoveries emerging at astonishing speed, each new one pushing us further and further out into the frontiers of science. As cutting-edge research and science continues to expand our knowledge of the power mind-body connection, from this more holistic perspective, modern healthcare can be seen as not merely the absence of disease or symptoms—but rather as a state of achieving optimal health, vitality, wellbeing and wholeness for all. It can be seen as achieving a life in balance.

And in twenty years from now, just as it was before, we will look back and see that we are standing at the crossroads of the future of wellness.
